Today, San Diego loses one of our own. Carl Weathers, a San Diego State graduate, passed away at 76. Carl Weathers is an actor known to the older generations for his role in Rocky and to the young generations as Greef Karga.

Additionally, Carl Weathers was a former professional football player, born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Weathers pursued an early interest in acting and athletics simultaneously.

Before his acting career, Weathers played football at San Diego State University, demonstrating considerable talent on the field. His athletic abilities led him to a brief professional football career, first with the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) and then with the B.C. Lions in the Canadian Football League (CFL) during the early 1970s.

After retiring from football, Weathers turned his focus entirely to acting. He started with small parts in films and television shows, gradually building his reputation as a robust and charismatic presence on screen.

His breakthrough came with the role of Apollo Creed in the 1976 film “Rocky.” Weathers’ portrayal of the confident and charismatic boxing champion opposite Sylvester Stallone’s underdog character made him a household name. It established a long-lasting on-screen partnership spanning four “Rocky” films.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Weathers continued to work in film and television, taking on various roles that showcased his range as an actor. His role in the 1987 action film “Predator” as Dillon, a challenging but ultimately tragic character, further cemented his status as an action star.

Overall, Carl Weathers opened up to a new generation of fans with “The Mandalorian” series. It is currently unknown what ailments Weathers faced, but terribly tragic nonetheless.
